January stamps will feature the 100-year-old Yle, Valentine’s Day and floral greetings

Posti will issue three stamp publications with a total of 12 different stamps on Wednesday, 14 January.

"Yle’s 100th anniversary stamps depict Yle’s various operations, the colorful Valentine’s Day stamps celebrate spending time together and the congratulatory stamps feature roses and mallow flowers," says Tommi Kantola, who is responsible for the selection of the artists and for providing guidance on the artistic work for the stamps at Posti.

    Five perspectives on Yle

Yle will celebrate its 100th anniversary in September this year. The theme of the anniversary year is moments spent together. Posti will celebrate the event with stamps designed by Anna-Mari Tenhunen that showcase different aspects of Yle’s operations – culture, children’s programmes, drama, production and technology.

The stamps feature Ransu, Riku and Uncle-Elmeri from the Karvakuonot series, musicians from the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Oona and Arttu from the Aikuiset series (actors Anna Airola and Elias Salonen). The stamps also feature the TV control room and the TV test card that is familiar to many.

"The theme of 100-year-old Yle is a truly delicious and fascinating cornucopia – our shared living archive, with which almost every Finn has a unique relationship. It was a great honor for me to be able to design stamps on this subject. The most challenging part of the work was to condense Yle’s diverse operations and long history into five stamps," says Anna-Mari Tenhunen.

Valentine’s Day stamps feature shared moments

The Valentine’s Day stamps feature colorful illustrations of friendship and spending time together in different situations, designed by Pietari Posti.

"The stamps are cheerful and warm images of friendship, spending time together and shared moments. The themes of the stamps center around the different dimensions of friendship – from travel and adventures to small everyday moments," says Pietari Posti.

The stamps represent a modern, clear-lined and colorful illustration style. The illustrations also have a touch of vintage style from old travel posters. “I wanted the themes and illustrations of the stamps to be timeless, because the no-value indicator stamps can be used for a long time,” says Posti.

Roses and mallow flowers go well together

Oona Himanen has designed floral stamps that are suitable for various congratulations and greetings. The stamps feature a glowing red rose with a pink perennial mallow flower.

"I was given the assignment to design two floral stamps for congratulations. From the beginning, roses felt like a suitable option for one of the stamps – red roses are classic and always a good choice for different congratulations and celebrations," says Himanen.

Himanen paired the roses with mallow flowers, which evoke nostalgic feelings as a perennial in old yards. "In recent years, people have included mallow flowers in their yards again. I think roses and mallow flowers go well together and could be a fresh new combination in flower bouquets as well."
