Sanomalehti Karjalainen and Posti are planning the delivery of the newspaper and day mail in the same delivery round to the Juuka, Nurmes and Valtimo regions as of September 11, 2023

Sanomalehti Karjalainen and Posti are planning to deliver the newspaper and day mail to the Juuka, Nurmes and Valtimo regions in the same delivery round. The newspaper and day mail could be delivered in the same delivery round as of September 11, 2023. The mail would be delivered to urban areas first and then to sparsely populated areas. The newspapers would continue to be delivered according to a schedule agreed on with the senders every day from Monday to Friday.

The development of early-morning and daytime newspaper deliveries is part of the cooperation between Sanomalehti Karjalainen and Posti. Creating new solutions will lay the foundation for sustainable cost development in delivery in the future.

“We want to continue to be able to offer our readers a physical newspaper delivered to their home. We also offer our readers digital services alongside the traditional delivery service,” says Lasse Valkila, Sales Manager at Sanomalehti Karjalainen.

“At Posti, we have had great experiences of similar combinations of newspaper and day mail deliveries in the same delivery round elsewhere in Finland. We believe that this delivery method will also work in Juuka, Nurmes and Valtimo. Earlier this year, a similar change was made in Ilomantsi, Kiihtelysvaara and Tuupovaara,” says Ari Korhonen, Head of Area at Posti.

With a single delivery round, even more attention will be paid to sustainability issues that are important to Posti and Karjalainen, such as climate targets. Combining deliveries and optimizing routes makes it possible to reduce the mileage, fuel costs and carbon dioxide emissions of delivery.

We will inform mail recipients about this change in more detail closer to the planned date.

Posti is also planning to expand the alternate-day delivery of day mail to Juuka, Koli, Nurmes and Valtimo

Posti is also planning to expand its alternate-day delivery of day mail to the Juuka, Koli, Nurmes and Valtimo areas. According to the plan, the changes would take effect on September 11, 2023.

In alternate-day delivery, the delivery days of day mail alternate between postal code areas, which means that mail may be delivered on different days in neighboring districts. Printed mail is delivered on weekdays in alternating two-week periods:

- on Monday, Wednesday and Friday one week

- on Tuesday and Thursday the following week.

In the first week of alternate-day delivery, the delivery days in the postal code area can be either Monday, Wednesday and Friday or Tuesday and Thursday. The following week, the days are swapped.

Universal service items (stamped items) are delivered in accordance with the Postal Act. Alternate-day delivery does not apply to the delivery of parcels, with the exception of small parcels that fit in the mailbox or slot, which are delivered with day mail. Magazines, addressed newspapers and advertisements delivered with day mail are delivered according to a schedule agreed with the senders. There may be some changes to their delivery times.

We will inform mail recipients in more detail about the changes to delivery with a public notification closer to their planned date.

In Finland, regional alternate-day delivery is already in use in many areas. Similar delivery models are also used across the Nordic Region. The reason for this is the dramatic decrease in the volume of printed mail.

By renewing delivery, Posti can continue to offer traditional delivery services alongside digital services.

Route optimization also makes it possible to reduce the mileage, fuel costs and CO2 emissions. Posti is committed to achieving zero emissions by 2030.

The planned changes to delivery will first be negotiated with Posti’s personnel and the possible change needs will be specified as the negotiations progress. The alternate-day model provides better opportunities for full-time work.

Posti’s Change Unit will provide personnel with personal support for career planning and strives to seek suitable solutions within Posti, together with the business and employees.
