Special postmarks to be stamped on Christmas greetings in Helsinki and Lahti from December 1

26.11.2021

Special postmarks designed for Christmas greetings will be in use in Helsinki and Lahti from Wednesday, December 1. You can get this year’s special postmarks for your Christmas greetings from 1 to 16 December in Helsinki and 1 to 18 December in Lahti.

Mailboxes reserved for special postmark items will be placed near Postitalo’s entrances at Mannerheiminaukio 1 and Elielinaukio 2 in Helsinki. You will recognize the mailboxes by the picture of the Christmas postmark on the mailbox’s information field.

Lahti is once again hosting a traditional Christmas nativity event. Posti stamps the special postmark on all Christmas greetings that have been dropped off in the mailbox at Vapaudenkatu 6 between December 1 and December 18. Items dropped off on Independence Day, December 6, and Sunday, December 5 and December 12, will be stamped the following weekday.

This year’s Helsinki Christmas postmark features ornate patterns

The traditional Christmas postmark, which puts the finishing touch on a true Christmas greeting, has been extremely popular among customers. Helsinki’s special postmark decorates around 300,000 Christmas greetings every year.

Susanna Rumpu and Ari Lakaniemi have designed Helsinki’s Christmas postmark this year. The postmark features ornate patterns. The theme of the postmark is a great fit for this year’s Christmas stamps. The ornate pattern postmark goes well with other postage stamps, too. The postmark also includes the text Joulu Julen.

This year’s nativity postmark features Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus

This year’s nativity postmark depicts Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus with the church tower of Keski-Lahti Congregation’s Church of the Cross in the background. Joseph’s face mask is a reference to the pandemic and the star of hope to overcoming it. The star is also a reference to the Star of Bethlehem, which is often depicted as a narrow four-pointed star.

Nativity postmarks have been published almost every year since 2005. Like the previous years’ nativity postmarks, this year’s postmark, the sixteenth to be published, has been designed by heraldist Tapani Talari.
