The negotiating parties were not yet able to reach an agreement in the collective agreement negotiations that continued over the weekend. The Finnish Post and Logistics Union PAU has announced that the strike will continue. The estimates regarding the effects of the strike and sympathy strikes on the delivery of mail will become clearer each day.
“Despite the strike, we have managed to deliver parcels well in most parts of the country. According to the current estimate, we will be able to deliver the majority of parcels to our customers on time. Unfortunately, with the strike still ongoing, a small number of parcels may be delayed by up to a week. The freight services will operate normally. We have also been able to sort and deliver some printed mail,” says Jarmo Ainasoja, Head of Exception Management at Posti.
"According to the current estimate, parcels will be delivered on time over the Christmas period. The Christmas timetables are available on our website. Christmas cards should be equipped with the correct address and stamps and placed in Posti’s red mailing envelope to enable us to process them smoothly."
Current estimate of the effect of PAU’s strike as well as the sympathy strikes
PAU’s strike affects some of Posti’s services. When it comes to domestic mail, the effects are nationwide.
Services that are open or operate as normal:
- Early-morning newspaper delivery
- Warehousing services
- Freight services
- Work related to safety and health (including local and national delivery of food, foodstuff, groceries, pharmaceuticals and hospital products that are related to health and safety) in part
PAU has excluded from the strike all work related to safety and health.
“Posti expects PAU to fulfill its promised responsibility and help ensure the normal delivery of these extremely important items,” says Ainasoja.
The delays or unusual opening hours caused by the strike and the sympathy strikes:
- The majority of parcels will be delivered as normal, but a few parcels will be delayed. A few parcels can be directed to an alternative pickup point as close as possible to the original pickup point.
- There may be delays in food logistics deliveries (brewery products and the food industry).
- Letters (may be delayed by several weeks)
- Magazines (may be delayed by several weeks)
- Direct marketing, i.e. advertisements (may be delayed by several weeks)
- Instructions regarding mail forwarding (change of address, mail delivery interruption, fixed-term forwarding) submitted using a printed form (delays of up to several weeks)

The majority of Posti's service points, that is, Posti’s own shops, the service points managed by Posti's partners as well as parcel lockers, are working as normal. At the moment, approximately 5% of the service points are experiencing disruptions.

The various labor unions’ sympathy strikes affecting Posti’s operations
The Finnish Aviation Union’s (IAU) sympathy strike applies to the handling of mail at airports. Parcels arriving via airmail from Sweden, the Baltic countries or other EU countries may be delayed by a few days. Most parcels to/from Europe are delivered as road transport, so the effect on them has been minimal. The strike has the greatest effect on international parcels and letter items delivered by air transport to/from countries outside of Europe (such as the US, Japan or China). Such shipments will not be sent until after the strike. The letterbox-delivery of international letters, magazines and advertisements will also be suspended.
The Finnish Seafarers’ Union’s sympathy strike means that domestic boarding craft, ferries and cable ferries, international freight and RoPax vessels as well as car and passenger ferries refuse to carry Posti’s deliveries. Under the circumstances, the sympathy strike will impede the delivery of mail in the archipelago, for example.
Information regarding the effects of the strike will be communicated twice a day at around 12 noon and 6 p.m.

“We would like to thank our customers for their patience. We are very sorry about the uncertainty and disruptions caused by PAU. We will do everything within our power to get deliveries to their recipients, even if they arrive a little late. As some of our personnel are still working, we will also be able to deliver some of the shipments in the next few days,” says Jarmo Ainasoja.
