Itella's new logistics center in Pennala has now been completed. The construction of the logistics center, which is the size of ten football fields, started in May 2011. The center was transferred to Itella at the beginning of June. Together with the current Pennala service warehouse, Pennala 2 offers storage space of more than 100,000 m2 to customers of Itella Logistics.
The first sections of the logistics center, Halls C and D, were opened at the beginning of January. These are used to run the domestic warehouse operations of Rautakesko, for which Itella Logistics is responsible. Hall B was completed at the beginning of April and Hall A after that at the end of May. In addition to hardware products, the new 77,000 m2 logistics center serves to store and process clothing, dangerous goods (ADR) and household appliances.
The logistics center also accounts for energy and the environment. The facilities use environmentally sound technology, such as a hybrid heating system (geothermal heat and natural gas) and energy-saving wall panels which are more airtight than usual. The center also uses LED lighting and shelf lights controlled by motion detectors.
The new center further improves the efficiency of the domestic operations of Itella Logistics. Pennala in Orimattila is situated in a logistically good location. Furthermore, the price of land and the availability of personnel had an effect on the location of the logistics center.
