Interruptions in mail delivery continue due to industrial action

27.10.2010

An overtime and extra work prohibition by the Finnish Post and Logistics Union PAU will continue to cause delays in mail delivery throughout Finland of about one day. The industrial action does not apply to early-morning paper delivery. Posti shops and postal agency shops will provide services as usual.

The overtime and extra work prohibition is at risk of a turning into strike. The possible cessations of work announced for the first two weeks of November, from November 2-11, would concern mail sorting at the post centers and terminals of Turku, Jyväskylä, Seinäjoki, Rovaniemi, Tampere, Oulu, and Kuopio. In mail delivery, the impact would be on postal code areas with prefixes 21-25 in South-Western Finland, and those with prefix 00-19 in Southern Finland. At Posti shops, a possible strike would apply to Turku, Raisio, and Kaarina. More information about the specific effects will be provided later.

The situation is based on the collective labor agreement for the communication and logistics industry, which expired on October 15. The goal of the ongoing negotiations is to reach an outcome as quickly as possible, which would enable good cooperation and close dialogue between Itella and the employees when facing the current major challenges in the postal sector. The financial situation of postal operations has rapidly deteriorated, which is why a very moderate expense increase is necessary in, for example, paper delivery costs.

The increasing digitalization of communication as part of the development of the information society is an important factor affecting the postal industry. Digital services decrease the volume of traditional mail. The updating of the postal legislation, taking place next year, is another factor that will influence the postal industry.
