Tatu and Patu to go on an adventure in stamps this fall

14.05.2020

The other stamps for June–November to showcase innovations, wild flowers and literacy

From June to November 2020, Posti will issue 11 new stamp publications with a total of 33 different stamps designs. The stamps will be issued in three batches on June 3, September 2 and November 4.

Stamps issued in June to feature Finnish innovations, wild flowers in bloom and animals that often visit people’s yards

In our day-to-day lives, we use many Finnish innovations that were born out of a need to make daily life easier. The stamps, which were designed by Susanna Rumpu and Ari Lakaniemi, showcase six Finnish inspirations that are also famous internationally: the heart rate monitor, xylitol, the Rapala wobbler lure, the Abloy lock, the pedestrian safety reflector and the winter tire. The Made in Finland  stamp booklet contains six domestic no-value indicator stamps.

Posti celebrates the UN International Year of Plant Health 2020 with a roll of stamps that features wild flowers in bloom. In Finland, the programme for the International Year of Plant Health also includes campaigns to protect pollinators: Hyönteishotellit2020 and Pelasta Pörriäinen. Without wild flowers and the insects that pollinate them, many crops would also be in trouble. The Wild Flowers stamps, designed by Paula Salviander, will be issued as a roll of 100 stamps. The eight different domestic no-value indicator stamp designs included in the roll feature the common hepatica, the lily of the valley, the wild pansy, the harebell, the meadow buttercup, the red clover, the ox-eye daisy and the wood cranesbill.

Hedgehogs and squirrels are common visitors to people’s yards. In June, they will also be seen in cute stamps designed by Stiina Hovi. The stamps are issued as part of the Norden series, which is a joint project by the Nordic postal administrations. This year’s theme is mammals. Norden: Yard Visitors is a stamp sheet containing 10 domestic no-value indicator stamps with two different stamp designs.

The subjects for stamps issued in September are Tatu and Patu, literacy, Posti’s art award and a small dreamer

In September, Tatu and Patu will break into a new field as the anarchic duo is featured in stamps. As this is about Tatu and Patu, the stamps will not be ordinary either. The stamps, which were designed and illustrated by Aino Havukainen and Sami Toivonen, use technical tricks that were not possible in the books. The Tatu and Patu stamp booklet contains six different domestic no-value indicator stamps.

Literacy promotes understanding, tolerance and equality. It develops critical thinking skills, well-being and empathy. The International Literacy Day is celebrated in early September. This year, Posti marks the day with stamps featuring a drawing-like design by Ilkka Kärkkäinen. The stamps present four different figures created using letters and other characters. The Literacy and Reading miniature sheet contains four different domestic no-value indicator stamps.

Stamps for this fall also showcase the nature-themed graphic art by Janne Laine, this year’s winner of Posti’s art award. Two images from Laine’s large body of work were chosen for the stamps. Sunset depicts sturdy spruces at sunset, behind which you can see dead trees. Duet features two dark forms of birds perching on a treetop against a background of light sky and reddish clouds. Posti’s art award 2020: Janne Laine will be issued as a 10-stamp sheet containing two different domestic no-value indicator stamp designs.

A Little Dreamer, designed by visual artist Netta Tiitinen, is based on a commissioned painting that depicts a girl who loves glitter and sparkles reaching up. According to Tiitinen, the stamp and the painting reflect the courage, enthusiasm, curiosity and spontaneity of children. The domestic no-value indicator stamp A Little Dreamer will be issued as a 10-stamp sheet.

This year’s Christmas stamps were born out of a design competition

This year’s Christmas stamps were created through a design competition held by Posti together with the University of Lapland’s Faculty of Art and Design. The Christmas greeting no-value indicator stamp will be Village Elf by Ida Sarisalmi, and the domestic no-value indicator stamp will be Christmas Cottage by Jutta Luukkonen. The domestic no-value indicator stamp for Christmas greetings will be issued as a 20-stamp sheet. The Christmas domestic no-value indicator stamp will be issued as a 10-stamp sheet and a five-stamp booklet.

The international no-value indicator stamp for Christmas will be the atmospheric Welcome to the Village stamp by Matti Pikkujämsä. The nostalgic Sled Ride stamp shows a girl holding a rooster on her lap. The stamp, which was photographed by Suvi Roiko, is great for sending winter greetings. Both Welcome to the Village!  and Sled Ride will be issued as a 10-stamp sheet.

Posti reserves the right to make changes.
