In pursuit of its goal to reduce emissions, we mainly focus on projects that are directly related to our operations. We neutralize the remaining carbon-dioxide emissions related to the transport and delivery of Posti Green services by funding climate projects.
In practice, this means that while the delivery of one letter generates 20 grams, or a parcel 900 grams, of carbon dioxide, we make sure that a corresponding amount is cut from emissions somewhere else.
The climate projects take place in countries that have no cap-and-trade schemes. The climate projects do not take place in Finland or any other country that have signed the Kyoto Protocol, and have already committed to certain emission reduction goals. Posti participates for example wind power projects in India and Turkey. Produced renewable energy replaces fossil fuels and therefore reduces emissions. Additionally, the projects create jobs locally.
Improved cook stoves utilize simple design enhancements to burn biomass fuel more cleanly and efficiently. They reduce greenhouse gas emissions, alleviate pressure on forests and reduce harmful smoke, and save families money and time acquiring fuel. One‐third of the world's population rely on burning biomass for their daily cooking needs.
Clean energy from biomass is taking place in the state of Punjab. The power plant results in the generation of 90.311.000 kWh of clean electricity every year to feed 115.000 households. The power plant utilizes fuels derived from local cotton and mustard stalk. The project generates local employment positions during the operation and maintenance of the boiler as well as during the transportation and storage of biomass. It has also created additional income for farmers who sell the biomass that was previously left to rot.
The wind power park consists of 812 wind turbines and results in the generation of 817.000.000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per a year. This amount is enough to supply 500.000 households for one year. Renewable energy eliminates emissions and other air pollutants, improves local air conditions and minimizes negative health impact.
The wind farm of Balikesir is located at the port city of Bandirma. With 10 wind turbines the project generates 99.000 MWh renewable energy annually. This amount of electricity is enough to supply 34 000 households with clean energy for a year simultaneously reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The project created 50 temporary jobs during construction period and 15 additional permanent positions during operation.
